1. Leak Detector

Many mechanical water meters include a small triangle or dial that rotates whenever water is moving through the system.

Because it is extremely sensitive, the leak detector may move even when only a small amount of water is flowing. If the indicator continues moving when all faucets, appliances, and irrigation systems are turned off, it may indicate a leak somewhere on the property.

2. Sweep Hand

The sweep hand measures smaller increments of water usage.

Typically, one complete rotation represents one cubic foot of water, or approximately 7.48 gallons. The markings around the outside of the meter help measure partial amounts of water usage.

3. Register

The register displays the total amount of water that has passed through the meter over its lifetime.

To calculate water usage during a billing period, compare the current reading to the previous reading and subtract the difference.

Water Measurement Conversions

Water consumption is commonly measured in either gallons or cubic feet.

  • 1 cubic foot = 7.48 gallons
  • 100 cubic feet (HCF) = 748 gallons

Many utility providers bill water usage in HCF, while others use gallons.
